Essential employees in Flint were dealt with to
lunch Monday in honor of Labor Day.”It's an outright honor. It's an opportunity to be in this position and to be able to celebrate our important workers,” Asa Zuccaro said.
Zuccaro is the executive director at the Latinx Technology and Community Center in Flint. That's where a drive through event to commemorate important workers happened this afternoon. Volunteers treated vital employees to some lunch, while at the very same time, making sure all who showed up are counted in the census and signed up to vote.
“We partnered with Fish and Chicken Land, so we got the very best fried chicken and fried fish and catfish,” Zuccaro said. “And too we partnered with Laredo's to ensure we got some tacos, beans, and rice.”
Twenty-five students, from the University of Michigan Flint, Michigan State, and Eastern Michigan all provided their time this Labor Day to commemorate those who have actually worked relentlessly throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.
Levi Todd coordinated the volunteer effort. “I want us to have unity which was the entire point of this event is unity,” he said. “And a group of so many brilliant private leaders from all over simply coming together, interacting.”
The important employees we talked with state they appreciate what's being done for them.
“It's great to understand that everyone cares and it's great seeing people come together and come hang out and get some excellent food,” someone said.
“The nurses, truck chauffeurs like myself, food delivery people, to feel that you they recognize us it feels great,” another said.
Zuccaro says 350 meals were handed out. He informs us he wished to do more, however he is glad he might do something for individuals who have offered a lot.
“To understand that you would be putting yourself at danger and your household at risk, we're grateful,” Zuccaro stated.
